Freelance pool

Location

Per-project — primarily U.S.

Compensation

$1,200 – $1,800 / day

§ 01 — The work

We are building out our freelance DP roster. Most of our work is documentary or documentary-adjacent. We shoot patiently, often handheld, occasionally on long lenses, and we expect our DPs to make the camera disappear in rooms where the subjects already feel observed enough.

This is a project-based engagement, not a full-time staff role. We typically book DPs for one-to-three-week shoots, with occasional longer commitments for documentary features.

We pay current market day rates, cover travel, and handle production logistics in-house. We are not bringing on DPs who require us to also act as production company.

§ 02 — What we look for

  • 01Three-plus years shooting documentary or longform nonfiction
  • 02Comfort owning a one-camera shoot with limited crew
  • 03Currency on at least two of the camera packages used in current premium nonfiction
  • 04Demonstrated ability to compose for the cut, not for the still
  • 05Willingness to take direction from a director and an editor

§ 03 — What we don't

We try to be specific about who this role is not for.

  • ×DPs whose primary work is commercial or wedding cinematography
  • ×Anyone who needs a three-person camera department for an interview

§ 04 — Apply

Send your work, not a cover letter.

Send your reel, a list of recent shoots with director credits, and your standard day rate (including kit fee if applicable).

Include

  • Reel
  • Recent shoots with director credits
  • Day rate and kit fee

We read every application within two weeks. We respond to every applicant whose work we read, even briefly. We do not use ATS keyword filters.
