§ 01 — The work

We are looking for a designer who knows what a good magazine looks like and why. You will design our publications, our clients' annual reports, our editorial sites, and the print pieces our editorial work ships into.

Most of our design work is editorial — type-led, photography-led, restrained, and built to be read. You will also touch the studio's own brand surfaces as needed, but the bulk of the work is real publications.

We are not a brand agency. We are a studio that publishes. The right designer for this role is someone who would rather design a magazine than design a deck.

§ 02 — What we look for

  • 01Five-plus years in editorial design at a magazine, newspaper, publishing house, or comparable
  • 02Strong type sense — defensible opinions about which faces work for body text and why
  • 03Comfort designing across print and digital with equal craft
  • 04Experience working with editors and writers on real publications
  • 05A portfolio that includes at least one extended editorial system (a magazine, a recurring series, a book)

§ 03 — What we don't

We try to be specific about who this role is not for.

  • ×Brand designers whose strongest work is logos and decks
  • ×Designers without editorial publication experience

§ 04 — Apply

Send your work, not a cover letter.

Send three published projects (link to PDFs or live work), and a paragraph on the publication you think has the best current art direction.

Include

  • Three published projects
  • Note on a publication with great art direction

We read every application within two weeks. We respond to every applicant whose work we read, even briefly. We do not use ATS keyword filters.
